From the age of 5, Mina had donned a head-to-toe veil and religiously performed her Islamic prayers five times a day.

She learned the names of Allah (the Arabic name for “god”) and the prophet Muhammad before she learned the names of her parents. She recited verses of the Koran by heart.

Mina Nevisa and her husband were born into radical Muslim families in Iran.

She grew up believing Islam was the only true religion.

“We thought Christians still needed to learn more, because Muhammad came after Jesus,” she told Family Voice. “[In Islam], Jesus is a prophet. He is not the Savior.

He is not the Son of God. [Muslims] respect the Bible because it is a holy book, [but] they think [the Koran is] the most complete.”

But as time went on, elements of her religion troubled Mina.
