Marten was born as Wicaksono Abdul Salam on 1 March 1952 in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia.

In 1974, he made his acting debut in the film Bobby. He achieved fame with his starring role in Cintaku di Kampus Biru (My Love on the Blue Campus), a 1976 film which was adapted from the Ashari Siregar's novel.
One of his more notable roles from the time is as the lead actor of Teguh Karya's 1977 film Badai Pasti Berlalu (The Storm Will Surely Pass). By the end of the 1970s, he was one of the five highest paid actors in Indonesia.
