Namvar Singh is an Indian writer who writes in Hindi language.
He is best known as a progressive literary critic, apart from being a scholar, linguist, academician and theoretician.

He is one of the foremost disciples of Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, under whom Singh did his research work to complete PhD. Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971, Shalaka Samman in 1991, Sahitya Bhushan Samman and Kuvempu Rashtreeya Puraskar are some of the major honours received by him.
As a writer, Kavita Ke Naye Pratiman, Chhayavaad and Dusari Parampara Ki Khoj are his major works.
Namvar Singh was born on 28 July 1926 in Jiyanpur, Azamgarh District, of present day Uttar Pradesh. Noted writer Kashinath Singh is his younger brother.
His early education was completed from his village, and then moved to Varanasi for higher studies where he studied at Udai Pratap Autonomous College and Banaras Hindu University. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Hazari Prasad
